Prefinished vs. Site Finished Hardwood Flooring Floor Coverings International Plano

Floor Coverings International® of knows that there are a lot of unfamiliar terms that arise when you begin looking for hardwood flooring. We want to help you better understand your options so you can pick out a flooring that makes sense for you, your home, and your budget. Come along as we discuss the differences between prefinished and site finished hardwood flooring.

What is Prefinished Hardwood?

Prefinished hardwood is a type of wood flooring that is sanded and finished off-site and then brought in and installed as a finished product. Because prefinished hardwood is prepared in the factory, a stronger finish can be applied than during in-home installations. The factory-controlled atmosphere allows for a greater number of applied coats and an intensive ultraviolet light drying process.

What is Site Finished Flooring?

Site finished flooring, as opposed to prefinished, is laid down and then sanded and finished on-site. This type of flooring is usually only subjected to two or three finishing coats and is then allowed to air dry. Since site finished flooring is brought into your home prior to being stained, it can easily be made to match any existing hardwood you may have.

Which Hardwood Flooring Should I Choose?

If you are concerned about a longer installation timeline and don’t want to worry about lingering odors and dust from on-site installation, then prefinished hardwood flooring would be the way to go. Additionally, if you are anticipating that your floors will see a lot of foot traffic and general wear and tear, prefinished floors can provide a more protected surface on which to walk.

If, on the other hand, you are more interested in matching the staining on your existing hardwood floors, then choose to go with site finished flooring. This type of wood flooring is also great for homeowners looking for a more exotic species of hardwood or for the chance to add inlays and other customized detailing.
