Before you begin looking for area rugs, it is important to measure your space and decide how you want the rug to fit into your room. You can do a quick search for standard rug sizes to get a good idea of what options will be available to you. In general, these are some good guidelines to follow when configuring your space with an area rug.

General Suggestions

  • Try to tend towards larger area rugs. They help spaces look bigger and also provide more comfort.
  • It is important to take the shape of the room into consideration. For example, if the space is circular, mimic the shape with a rounded rug.

Living Areas

  • Find an area rug that fits all of your furniture fully within its border, leaving at least 18 inches between the rug and the edges of the room.
  • If you want a smaller rug, find one that fits at least the front feet of your furniture on it. If you choose an even smaller rug, find one that nicely contains your coffee table or whatever furniture piece is located at the center of your room.

Bedrooms

  • Either try to fit all of your room’s furniture on a single area rug, again leaving at least 18 inches of space between the rug and the walls, or select runners that can be placed on either side of your bed.

Dining Rooms

  • You want to try to fit all of the dining furniture onto a single area rug. Unlike living rooms, where just the front legs can be placed on the rug, dining chairs might tip back if placed similarly. This can present a potential safety hazard for you and your guests.
  • Just as you want to mimic the shape of the room with your area rug, so too should you try to replicate the shape of your dining table. If you are sitting around a rectangular table, go for a rectangular area rug. The same follows for circular tables.

Color

The color you decide to go with ultimately comes down to your own personal taste. But, if you want to highlight your floors, pick a contrasting color for your area rug. If you want to highlight your furniture or the décor of the rest of the room instead, select a rug that is either a neutral shade or in the same color family as your hardwood flooring. Whatever you decide, try to locate color swatches to test in your space before committing to a purchase.

Style

Once you’ve settled on a color scheme, you can begin looking for patterns that incorporate the colors you have picked out. Looking for area rugs to go with hardwood floors is always fun because hardwood provides a great, sleek surface on which to place practically any type of rug you could imagine. So whether you decide on a rug that is paisley and hand-tufted or color blocked and shaggy, your hardwood floors will be beautifully complimented.
