Hardwood flooring samples in PlanoHardwood or laminate — that’s the question millions of homeowners ask themselves every year. And truthfully, it’s a tough call. Both types of flooring will transform your living space. Both have that warm and cozy appeal, and both look high-end and classic. There are not-so-subtle differences between the two, however, and if you’re a renovator who’s still undecided, here’s what you need to know about both flooring options:

There’s a Substantial Price Difference

While the cost of any type of flooring varies by brand, style, and quality, the rule of thumb everywhere is that hardwood flooring doesn’t come cheap. Some woods are more economical than others because the trees grow faster and they’re more easily sustainable, but you’ll still pay more for real wood than you will for laminate. You’ll notice this most if you’re in the market for pricier options such as those stunning Brazilian hardwoods like mahogany.

Flooring installation in PlanoLaminate Can Be Installed Below-Grade

Laminate flooring can be used in basements, while the installation of hardwood is discouraged. Basements tend to be damp and prone-to-moisture, and this can warp and damage real hardwood. Laminate, however, has a water-resistant coating and is usually installed in plank form with pieces that simply snap together. This allows the laminate flooring to expand and contract to avoid warping.

Real Hardwood Flooring Increases Your Resale Value

Real hardwood floors cost more, and they’ll squeeze your renovation budget, but you’ll get a higher return on investment when it comes to resale value. Laminate wood flooring looks nearly identical to hardwood, but it does little to add equity. With hardwood, you’ll pay more to purchase the flooring, and it will cost more to install, but you’ll recoup that and more if you ever decide to sell your home.
